Peplums, People! A Fashion Comeback?

A fashion comeback no one saw coming – or did we? As I was attending show after show and looking through all the new collections, I couldn’t help but notice the reemergence of one distinct, infamous silhouette: The peplum. Body-con to flare out at the waist – Millennials thought they’d never recover and with Gen Z side-eyeing all the fashion trends happening between 2008 and 2018, I never thought I’d see the day again and yet here we are. Peplums are back. Suddenly I regret ridding myself of my own tops with the flared hips.

So let us take a closer look at peplums and their comeback…

A Quick Lesson In History

The silhouette mainly stems from the 1940s and 1950s and was made especially popular by Christian Dior’s New Look. The little flare at the hip was often incorporated in tailored jackets and dresses to add feminine touches during a Post-War “mend-and-make-do” fashion.

The detail experienced a comeback in the 1980s, now often in combination with the infamous big shoulder-pads and cinched waist to create an exaggerated hourglass figure.

The last time we saw the peplum was in the early 2010s. Peplum tops over pencil skirts for office core or skinny jeans for girlie vibes on the daily. Especially this time period seems to have not made a good case for the silhouette – but then again, is there anything we still like from the 2010s?

Why Did You Come Back?

New Nostalgia

Fashion is a never-ending cycle – just when you think you’ve left a trend buried in old photo albums, it resurfaces, ready for its comeback. As we’ve seen, the peplum has long been tied to femininity and post-war elegance, symbolising a sense of structure and refinement. With the world feeling more unpredictable than ever, its return might just be a subconscious craving for something familiar – a stylish throwback to times that felt a little more stable.

Power To The Peplum

Peplums aren’t just back—they’re making a statement. Cinched at the waist, flaring out just enough, they add structure and drama without even trying. It’s a silhouette that exudes confidence, serving both poise and presence in equal measure. And in an era where fashion is all about embracing different body shapes and celebrating individuality, the peplum feels like a nostalgic yet bold reclaiming of femininity—playful, powerful, and just the right amount of extra.

Sustainable Silhouettes

The return of the peplum isn’t just a throwback; it’s part of fashion’s growing shift towards sustainability. Instead of endlessly chasing newness, there’s a fresh appreciation for reviving and reinterpreting timeless silhouettes. The peplum isn’t stuck in the past—it’s getting a modern update, proving that good design never really fades, it just waits for the right moment to shine again.
